A breathtaking photograph of Baise, Guangxi, has taken the world by storm after being featured in the United Nations World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) 2025 calendar.
Titled "Electric Roasted Sea Bass", the image captured by photographer Liang Ke depicts lightning piercing the clouds above Baise's Youjiang River, its neon-lit waters mirroring the electric spectacle below.
Selected as China's sole entry, the photo has garnered global acclaim, with the Global Alliance of News Agencies distributing the story in 10 languages across 20 countries, reaching over 300 million readers through 1,171 media outlets, including Associated Press, Fox News, and ABC.
The image has trended worldwide on Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, and LinkedIn, showcasing Baise's ecological beauty. Designated as Guangxi's sole pilot for climate-resilient urban development in 2024, Baise boasts a 100 percent water quality compliance rate at 25 monitored sites and ranks 9th nationally for surface water quality. Its air quality excelled with 98.4 percent "good" days last year.
Rare wildlife sightings, including leopard cats and Siberian cranes, underscore Baise's thriving ecosystem. Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences researcher Wan Rong suggests leveraging these ecological assets to develop health-focused industries, transforming Baise's "green wealth" into economic opportunities.
