The event is part of the Sanyuesan Festival, which is listed as a national intangible cultural heritage and an annual festival in Guangxi. In Guangxi, March 3 of the lunar calendar, or Sanyuesan, has been an important occasion for singing in the call-and-response style to find love, worship ancestors, and pray for a good harvest. It has been observed by many of the region's ethnic groups, including the Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Dong, and Mulao.
