Du Liqun, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and head nurse of the AIDS department of the Fourth People's Hospital of Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, shared her thoughts on helping children with autism.
As a member of the CPPCC National Committee for eight years, Du has consistently focused on healthcare and public welfare. This year, her primary concern is the issue of children with autism.
As of now, there are over 3 million children with autism in China, with a rising incidence rate of 1 in 100. However, there is a significant shortage of rehabilitation resources and a heavy financial burden on families. Du proposed that rehabilitation treatment for children with autism be fully covered by medical insurance, with higher reimbursement rates and fewer restrictions to provide substantial support to more families.
She also claimed that the government should increase financial investment, attract social capital to expand rehabilitation institutions, promote the integration of medical care and education, and enhance professional training to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
Early intervention is crucial. Public awareness campaigns should improve understanding of early screening and diagnosis to reduce misdiagnosis. Additionally, societal acceptance should be enhanced, encouraging businesses and communities to provide inclusive environments.
Only through the joint efforts of the government, medical institutions, families, and society can we build a strong rehabilitation support system for children with autism and truly brighten their futures, Du proposed.
