The 10th medical team from the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region for the cataract blindness elimination project has departed from Baise, Guangxi, on Feb 17, heading to Vientiane, Laos for a 46-day medical mission.
The project has sent nine teams comprising 76 ophthalmic medical personnel to Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Champasak, completing 5,230 cataract surgeries since its inception on September 2022.
"Our team consists of eight members. We will provide quality healthcare services to the Lao people through clinical teaching, academic exchanges, practical guidance, and public education, aiming to help Lao cataract patients regain their sight," said Liang Gaohua, the team leader.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The GX Foundation, a foundation in Hong Kong, and Guangxi medical teams have worked together on cataract blindness elimination projects in Laos and Cambodia in recent years.
