Weizhou Island in Beihai, Guangxi, recently won the "New Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards" at the United Nations Headquarters, where its unique "Beihai Gifts" were also showcased.
At the 19th Global Forum on Human Settlements, Zhang Shi, a representative of Weizhou Island's government, accepted the award. Her plush Bryde's whale — a key piece in the "Beihai Gifts" collection — drew attention from ambassadors and international delegates.
"Beihai Gifts" is an initiative by the Beihai government to promote local specialties, like pearl jewelry, shell carvings, and creative handicrafts. Zhang presented these souvenirs and bilingual brochures during the forum, highlighting Beihai's cultural heritage.
Guests, including New York-based filmmaker India Li, expressed excitement for Weizhou's marine culture, with Li noting plans to visit for potential film projects. The "Beihai Gifts" brand, featuring award-winning products like the Bubu series, continues to enhance Weizhou Island's international presence as a model of eco-tourism and local creativity.
