On Oct 10, the 2024 Belt and Road International Sailing Regatta commenced along the scenic coastal city of Beihai, attracting 30 elite sailing teams from 12 countries and regions.
The event will feature thrilling maritime competitions while promoting cultural exchange among participants.
Supported by the World Sailing Federation, the regatta has been listed in the annual calendar from 2022 to 2024 and aims to foster cooperation among countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. Beihai serves as the first station of the 2024 sailing regatta, featuring both inshore and long-distance races, which will continue until Oct 12.
Ye Jianhua, president of the Guangxi Sailing and Windsurfing Association, said that the regatta has drawn hundreds of top sailors, making it one of the largest and most famous sailing events in China in 2024.
Beihai also prepared a series of vibrant activities to enrich the experience for participants and spectators alike. The event themed around the BRI allows people to not only witness prestigious sailing competitions but also engage in carnival-like market activities, indulge in local delicacies, and admire the scenic beauty of Beihai.
After Beihai, the race will move to Langkawi, Malaysia, Hvar, Croatia, and Bodrum, Türkiye, from November to December 2024, further promoting international friendship and cooperation under the BRI.
