The Ministry of Natural Resources and the International Union for Conservation of Nature jointly released the International Case Collection of Coastal Zone Ecological Disaster Reduction and Efficiency Enhancement at the 2023 World Coastal Forum, which was held in Jiangsu's Yancheng on Sept 25.
The ecological construction case of Xiwan Hongsha Coastal Embankment in Fangchenggang, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, has been selected as one of the eight global international cases for coastal zone ecological disaster reduction and efficiency enhancement.
This project takes ecological concepts as a guide and uses measures such as building submerged dams in front of the embankment, laying hinge sloped protection bricks on the embankment, and planting vegetation.
It has constructed a hierarchical model of "mangrove forest - embankment - vegetation protection" for the ecological coastal embankment, integrating the concepts of disaster reduction, ecological protection, and cultural leisure into embankment construction. This enhances the disaster reduction and protection capabilities of the embankment, improves coastal biodiversity, and achieves the synergy between ecology and disaster reduction.
The innovative model of ecological and disaster reduction synergy in coastal embankments is what led to the so-called "Guangxi experience" for the ecological transformation of coastal embankments worldwide.
