Giant rice plants measuring more than 2 meters in height are soon to enter the harvest season in Liantang village of Guigang, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Local villagers started to grow this giant rice as part of a trial in late April, using an area of 13.3 hectares for their test.

"This is the first time that giant rice has been successfully cultivated in our village, with an estimated yield of 8,250 kg per hectare. Each mu may produce 150-200 kg more than regular rice," said Yang Baoding, director of the village committee of Liantang.

In addition to the pilot farmland in Liantang village, another four rice-crayfish paddy bases in Guigang city have introduced the "giant rice" variant this year.

Featuring high yields, high quality, lodging resistance, waterlogging resistance and resistance to insect pests and diseases, the rice plant can reach 2 meters tall and bears 100 more grains of rice per ear than regular ones.
