Guangxi saw a 112.8 percent increase in visitor numbers, reaching 28.92 million people, during the five-day May Day holiday, according to the statistics released by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on May 3.

The region's total tourism consumption over the holiday period surged by 91.8 percent year-on-year, and surpassed 20.55 billion yuan ($2.97 billion). This figure was 45.1 percent higher than that in 2019, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of travelers choosing long-term trips to areas outside of Guangxi and the number of people taking multiple day trips to several Guangxi cities have both recorded remarkable increases. The occupancy rate of hotels and homestays in Guangxi also saw a surge.

Those traveling within the region mainly chose family-friendly trips or self-driving routes during the holiday.

The Dongxing Checkpoint recorded a passenger throughput of more than 70,000 and the throughput of the Youyiguan Checkpoint has resumed to levels from 2019. The number of people crossing the region's boundaries during this holiday period exceeded 25,000.

Guangxi has also released new tourism products and routes during the holiday to encourage cultural tourism consumption. For example, Guilin dispatched several five-star new energy ships to sail along sightseeing routes on the Lijiang River. Additionally, Liuzhou launched eight themed tourism routes and charted bus lines to link tourist attractions and popular sites citywide.
