Guangxi boosts forest industry
Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region's undergrowth economy, led by forest planting and breeding, has been advocated, promoted, and rapidly developed into an industry worth up to hundreds of billion yuan.
According to statistics from the Guangxi Forestry Bureau, the total area of Guangxi's forest industry reached 64.23 million mu (4.28 million hectares) in 2019, accounting for more than one quarter of the total area of forest land in the region and exceeding that of cultivated land. The output value of the undergrowth economy is about 114.4 billion yuan ($16.24 billion).
Planting Chinese herbal medicine in forests has formed a large scale of forest planting and has driven many impoverished families in mountainous areas to be lifted out of poverty. The total output value of forestry Chinese herbal medicine in the region exceeds 10 billion yuan.
Returning common poultry and livestock to mountain forests has also become popular in the region. Guangxi Yangxiang Co, a leading enterprise engaged in the pig industry, has moved all the breeding pigs to the forests of Yaji Mountain and built the world's largest breeding farm there.
In addition to forest planting and forest breeding, the processing of forest products, such as rattan weaving, awning weaving, and bamboo weaving, as well as forest tourism based on advantageous resources have become the four major sectors of Guangxi's undergrowth economy and have newly generated income that is twice as high as that of ordinary timber forests.
Relying on green resources and ecological advantages, such as the top three forest coverage rates in the country, the largest artificial forest area in the country, the best vegetation ecological quality, top freshwater and seawater quality, as well as excellent air quality, Guangxi's undergrowth economy is expected to further grow more ecological industries.
