Liuzhou's Shanghai General Motors Wuling (SGMW) is a joint venture between two Chinese companies, SAIC Motor Corp and Liuzhou Wuling Motor Co, and the United States' General Motors (GM) China. Established on Nov 18, 2002, it has since become the leader among domestic automobile manufacturers. Headquartered in Liuzhou's Hexi, SGMW has three manufacturing bases, namely the Liuzhou Baojun Base, Qingdao, and Chongqing bases.
Adhering to its high-quality international strategy, SGMW has accelerated the transformation and upgrading of its products, as well as their popular automobile series, namely Wuling Sunshine, Wuling Rongguang, and Wuling Hongguang. Wuling Sunshine is SGMW's classic model, consistently selling well and placing third on the 2011 global list of best-selling vehicles, China's first vehicle to make the list. The United States' magazine Forbes once called it "the most important vehicle on earth". In 2011, SGMW also launched the Baojun brand to penetrate China's entry-level market for passenger cars. Its name, Baojun, means "treasured horse" in Chinese. In recent years, SGMW has been actively involved in the Belt and Road Initiative in an effort to develop its overseas market. Its newly-built subsidiary in Indonesia started production in July 2017, and it has the capacity to be able to produce 120,000 cars per year.
SGMW has also placed great emphasis on contributing to serving and accelerating the transformation and upgrading of Guangxi's economic and social development. Over the past few years, it has promoted the research and development of new energy vehicles.
In 2017, its annual production and sales volume amounted to 2.15 million, ranking among the top for the 12th consecutive year, and its share of passenger vehicle sales continued to rise to 72 percent, of which the annual production and sales of the Baojun brand surpassed one million.
