Five Guangxi achievements receive top science awards

Five achievements contributed to by Guangxi experts or organizations won second place prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award at the National Science and Technology Award Conference in Beijing on Jan 8.

Most notable is the construction technology related to concrete-filled steel tube arch bridges of over 500 meters. The development was headed by Professor Zheng Jielian of Guangxi University and Guangxi Road and Bridge Engineering Group Co Ltd.

The technology has been successfully applied to multiple mega-span arch bridges, saving 313 million yuan ($45.8 million) in construction costs and generating 119 million yuan in direct economic benefits.

Other award-winning achievements include the agricultural and forestry residue-made artificial board developed by Guangxi Fenglin Wood Industry Group Co Ltd, the recycling of concrete waste and concrete pavement on heavy-duty roads by Guangxi University, and uveitis diagnosis and treatment by the No 1 Affiliated Hospital of the Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine.

The State Science & Technology Progress Award is one of China's five highest scientific honors given by the State Council to recognize individuals and organizations for their contributions to sci-tech development. The other four awards are: the State Preeminent Science & Technology Award, State Natural Science Award, State Technology Innovation Award, and International Science & Technology Cooperation Award.
