Guangxi medical experts boost thalassemia cooperation in Vietnam

A six-member thalassemia expert team from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University recently visited Vietnam to deepen China-ASEAN cross-border medical cooperation on the disease.

Over the course of five days, the team toured medical institutions in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang, focusing on prevention, cross-border treatment, telemedicine, talent training and discipline building.

In Hanoi, they shared the "Guangxi Model" at Vietnam Central Children’s Hospital, showcasing advances in diagnosis, stem cell transplantation, gene therapy and MRI-based iron overload detection. With Vietnam having 13 million thalassemia gene carriers (12 percent of its population), both sides discussed cooperation in screening and training, building on existing ties.

In Hue, the team focused on collaboration plans, physician training, and student exchanges. In Da Nang, they presented stem cell therapy progress, AI diagnosis tools and a smart cloud platform for thalassemia management, while engaging patients and families.

The visit strengthened trust, with multiple prospective cooperation agreements reached. The hospital will continue utilizing China-ASEAN medical platforms to boost regional healthcare collaboration for mutual benefit.
