With the Mid-Autumn Festival drawing near, markets and mooncake makers in Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county, Hechi, are stepping up production and sales, contributing to the festive atmosphere. A sales boom is anticipated in late September.
At Huanjiang's farmers' market, vendors display various mooncakes prominently. Loose ones, priced 3-10 yuan ($0.42-$1.40), offer classic flavors like five-nut with barbecued pork, red bean paste, and lotus seed paste, alongside novel options such as fruit and lava egg yolk.
Gift boxes, ranging in price from 100-200 yuan, cater to different needs. "We started selling in early September, with a focus on classic flavors. Sales are moderate now but should pick up soon," said a shop owner.
In local workshops, over 10 workers mix fillings, shape pastries, and bake, combining handcraft with machines for consistent taste and efficiency.
One producer highlights unique flavors like fragrant pork, plus upgraded crusts with sea-buckthorn puree for better taste and nutrition. Orders come from Nanning, Guangdong, and Hunan, with more expected.
Currently, sellers are focusing on simply-packaged, affordable mooncakes. As the festival nears, demand will rise, peaking in late September. These treats carry wishes for reunion and uphold traditions.
