Longtan Dam: Guardian of green development
On July 2, 2001, Hechi Daily first reported on Longtan Dam, a landmark project that has transformed the region.
Over the past 23 years, Longtan has not only generated over 2,190 billion kWh of clean energy but also contributed to significant environmental improvements, reducing standard coal consumption by around 79 million tons and carbon emissions by 210 million metric tons.
Since the dam's completion, the Hongshui River has seen a dramatic improvement in water quality. The dam acts as a filter, preventing 37.4 million tons of sediment from flowing downstream annually. The project has also invested 310 million yuan ($43.87 million) in environmental protection, creating a model for sustainable development.
Residents have embraced the changes brought by the dam, benefiting from clearer waters and new economic opportunities like eco-friendly agriculture. Longtan has also supported biodiversity by releasing millions of rare fish species into the river and establishing conservation centers.
The next phase of the Longtan Dam includes integrating digital and smart technologies while expanding into wind and solar energy, positioning it as a key player in China's green energy future.
