Bama county stages Yao ethnic group's Zhuzhu Festival

The Bama Yao autonomous county held the eagerly anticipated 2023 Zhuzhu Festival on July 15.

Known as the New Year for the Yao ethnic group, the Zhuzhu Festival is an annual folk event held on the 29th day of the fifth lunar month.

It celebrates the harvest and also commemorates Miluotuo, a legendary figure of the Yao people.

During the opening ceremony, locals showcased their ethnic traditions by performing rituals such as playing bronze drums and singing folk songs.

The activities demonstrated the hopes of folks for good weather and great harvests. The locals also displayed their talent through singing, dancing, acrobatics and fashion shows.

On the same day, Bama set up a street exhibition to celebrate intangible cultural heritage, ethnic costumes and specialty agricultural products, attracting lots of visitors and tourists who came to enjoy the festivities and buy things.

In the evening, people gathered at the Bama County Eastern Sports Stadium. Against the backdrop of a bonfire, they danced with great enthusiasm.

One highlight of the evening was an international show, featuring performances by expat friends from Ukraine, Belarus, France, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar.
