Guangxi Mulun National Nature Reserve has recently discovered a new species, the goodyera viridiflora. This plant is found for the first time in Guangxi and marks the 12th new species discovered in the Mulun reserve this year.
The goodyera viridiflora grows in moist areas under the forest canopy at an altitude of about 1,000 meters. It's a small plant belonging to the orchidaceae family. It grows to a height of only 20 to 25 centimeters and has white spotted stripes on its leaves, accompanied by purple tinges.
This year, the reserve has discovered a dozen new species, including nine from the orchidaceae family, three from the ericaceae family and two others.
In recent years, the Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county has embraced the concept of sustainable development and effectively protected the biodiversity of the Mulun reserve.
The unique topography, geology and climate within the reserve provide optimal conditions for the growth of various plant species.
According to research chief Luo Liujuan, after years of conservation efforts the Mulun reserve has achieved a rich biodiversity.
It's currently home to an estimated 1,766 vascular plants, including six nationally protected species and 65 second-level protected species. Among these, 151 are from the orchidaceae genus.
