The expert team of the Sugarcane Research Institute of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences recently went to a sugarcane base in Meidong village, Beishan town, Yizhou district to understand the current sugarcane growth and planting situation in detail.

After their investigation, the expert group found that the main reasons for the decline of sugarcane yield were poor sugarcane varieties and excessive application of fertilizer. The problems could be solved by selecting new sugarcane varieties, improving fertilizer utilization, and improving soil quality.

In recent years, Yizhou district has attached importance to the development of its sugarcane industry. It has increased the publicity of preferential policies for planting sugarcane and encouraged local farmers to plant sugarcane. It also guided sugar manufacturing enterprises, family farms, sugar cane production cooperatives, and large growers to participate in the construction of sugarcane bases.

In addition, the district has also promoted mechanized planting, as well as further strengthened the adjustment of sugarcane varieties and base construction, thus improving the quality and yield of sugarcane.

In 2022, the area of sugarcane planting in Yizhou reached 257,000 mu (17,133 hectares). In 2023, the sugar cane yield is expected to reach 900,000 metric tons, and the sugar yield will be 120,000 tons. The district will also give more than 15.1 million yuan in sugarcane planting and nursing subsidies.
