Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county lifted out of poverty

Huanjiang Maonan autonomous county in Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region officially withdrew from the national list of impoverished counties on May 11.

Huanjiang is the only autonomous county of the Maonan ethnic group in China. At the end of 2015, the county undertook the arduous task of lifting 76 poverty-stricken villages out of poverty in the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, with a total of 66,600 impoverished people in 18,600 households.

As of the end of 2019, 65 poverty-stricken villages across the county have been lifted out of poverty, with a cumulative poverty reduction of 64,100 people. In 2019, Huanjiang’s regional GDP increased by 6.2 percent, its fiscal revenue increased by 44.3 percent, its fixed assets investment increased by 25.9 percent, and per capita disposable income of residents increased by 9.5 percent.

Huanjiang has focused on its industry layout, helping impoverished people find jobs and increase their income by building poverty alleviation industrial parks.

The county has also implemented precise policies and adapted funds according to local conditions to develop characteristic industries, promoting the high-quality development of the village-level collective economy. In 2019, the collective economic income of 145 villages (communities) in the county reached more than 40,000 yuan ($5627.03), of which 21 villages exceeded 100,000 yuan.
