Dahua's sugarcanes to bring in income of $21.43m
Sugarcanes planted in Dahua Yao autonomous county, Hechi recently entered their harvest season, with an estimated production of 290,000 metric tons and a sugar yield of 33,000 tons.
The output value of the sugarcane industry and the income of sugarcane growers are both expected to exceed 150 million yuan ($21.43 million), adding 18 million yuan to the county's fiscal revenue.
Boosting the development of the sugarcane industry has consistently been an essential part of the county's poverty alleviation efforts.
This year, the new plantation area of sugarcane in Dahua reached 13,300 mu (886.67 hectares), reaching the governmental annual target. The total cultivated area of the 3,592 sugarcane growing households exceeded 60,000 mu, of which 2,920 mu were planted by 467 registered impoverished families.
Dahua has also been deepening the institutional reform of its sugarcane industry by fully carrying out the practice of "contract farming."
To date, there were 2,458 sugarcane growing households signing purchasing and sales contracts, involving 61,400 mu of sugarcane.
In addition, preferential policies were also issued in the county. A subsidy of 6 yuan is provided for every ton of sugarcane sold to sugar enterprises, while impoverished households can receive a subsidy of 900 yuan for every mu of their newly planted sugarcane.
To date, the 3,144 sugarcane farmers in the county have received a total of 1.36 million yuan in subsidies, including 277,000 yuan received by 86 impoverished families.
Dahua also contributed 740,000 yuan to purchase 37,000 mu of sugarcane insurance for farmers.
