Scale chicken breeding boosts Dahua's economy
Dahua Yao autonomous county in Hechi, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has been building scale chicken breeding farms in recent years to increase the incomes of local households and help them get out of poverty.
The Qibainong chicken farm at Qingpo village in Gongchuan town was completed last November, covering an area of 70 mu (4.67 hectares). It currently has eight poverty alleviation workshops, with 305 participants from 79 registered poor households.
According to Wei Lianggao, director of the village's administrative committee, every impoverished household that participates in the farm can have an annual net income of 7,000 ($990) to 14,000 yuan.
"Last year, my family only worked at the farm for 12 days, and earned more than 10,000 yuan. The rest of the year, I went out to work and made extra income. In just one year, my family was lifted out of poverty," said Lan Kewen, whose family used to be poverty stricken.
With the first batch of chickens sold out, the other 17 poor households that participated in the farm also overcame poverty along with Lan.
The county plans to build 158 Qibainong chicken farms for poverty alleviation by the end of this year, of which 139 started construction and 110 have been finished.
By September, more than 150,000 Qibainong chickens have been sold from the county's poverty alleviation farms, generating sales revenue of 7.87 million yuan.
