New variety of corn boosts local economy in Du'an county
On May 15, the corn demonstration base in Anyang town, Du'an Yao autonomous county, Hechi city successfully harvested its first round of black corn, a new variety of corn which is being cultivated at the base.

On the day of the harvest, a team of experts visited the base and estimated the average yield to be 809 kilograms per mu, making the new crop an unmitigated success.

"This new variety of corn is rich in selenium, water-soluble melanin, anthocyanin (proven to protect against a myriad of human diseases), and various essential micronutrients," said Qin Debin, a researcher from the Guangxi Bureau of Seed Management. "It's tasty and nutritious with a strong yield, it should be promoted in more areas."

Since 2016, the corn-growing area in Du'an Yao autonomous county has increased from 5,000 mu (333.33hectares) to 9,000 mu. Black corn goes for a high price and brings in considerable profit, increasing the income of local farmers. The corn stalks also provide high-quality fodder for local animal husbandry.
