"This new variety of corn is rich in selenium, water-soluble melanin, anthocyanin (proven to protect against a myriad of human diseases), and various essential micronutrients," said Qin Debin, a researcher from the Guangxi Bureau of Seed Management. "It's tasty and nutritious with a strong yield, it should be promoted in more areas."

Since 2016, the corn-growing area in Du'an Yao autonomous county has increased from 5,000 mu (333.33hectares) to 9,000 mu. Black corn goes for a high price and brings in considerable profit, increasing the income of local farmers. The corn stalks also provide high-quality fodder for local animal husbandry.
