A total of 500,000 fishes were released to the Longjiang River in Hechi of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on March 1 as the annual fishing season came to a close.
Fishing in restricted areas and during closed seasons is prohibited in Hechi during a certain period in spring when the fish spawn, in order to protect aquatic species and contribute to the sustainable development of the fishery industry.
The city released 14 million fingerlings into the Pearl River basin since the spring fishing ban was imposed in 2011 and has significantly improved the ecological environment in the Hongshui River, one of the main branches of the Xijiang River in the Pearl River Basin and boosted the fishery industry in Hechi.
The fishing ban was extended in 2017 to bring all the lakes and rivers under the act and prolong the prohibition period from two months to four months.
"We call for attention and efforts from all circles of the society to implement the ban. The departments should carry out strict inspection around the restricted fishing areas and bear no tolerance to any illegal fishing", said Li Fengyun, deputy mayor of Hechi.
