Wuhan University was crowned the champion of the southern division of the 18th China University Robot Competition -- Robocon -- that took place in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, from May 18 to 19.

The theme of the competition was inspired by the postal delivery system in ancient times. Each team needed to use their comprehensive knowledge, techniques and methods regarding machineries, electronics and digital control to build at least two robots. The manual robot needed to cooperate with the automatic robot to complete the designated tasks within three minutes. For the first time in the event's 18-year history, a robot with four feet was in the running.

Accompanying the competition, there was also a forum on Chinese robotic education and industrial development, in which the participating teams were paired up with local primary school robot teams to advance elementary education. Nearly 400 contestants also better acquainted themselves with local industrial development and talent policies at a symposium, along with a field trip to Liuzhou hi-tech enterprises.

Founded in 2002, Robocon is held annually to select top minds to compete in the Asian Broadcast Union Robotic Competition (ABU Robocon) on behalf of China.

The event is expected to elevate Liuzhou in terms of sci-tech innovation and smart manufacturing by bringing in more talents and advanced technology.
